Do the never-ending pressures of teaching drain you emotionally? Is a lack of support and resources stealing your enthusiasm? Are the small daily hassles adding up and overwhelming you? If so, you're not alone. Awakened: Change Your Mindset to Transform Your Teaching was inspired by teachers who say, “I’m trying to stay positive. I’m trying not to get discouraged and frustrated, and keep a good attitude at work. I want to hold on to my enthusiasm for teaching. But STUFF keeps happening! How can I keep from losing my mind when my lessons are constantly interrupted, parents aren’t providing the support I need, students lack motivation, and test pressure sucks all the joy out of teaching?” I can totally relate. Teaching can be stressful and emotionally draining because it’s often a high demand/low control and high effort/low reward profession. That’s exactly why I wrote the book! Awakened is designed to help you:
- Lessen the demands you feel
- Increase your perception of control
- Decrease the mental and emotional energy you expend
- Enhance your positive, rewarding feelings
It's called The Awakened Devotional Study Guide for Christian Educators. This workbook is designed to deepen Christian teachers’ understanding of the principles in Awakened, elaborating on what God’s word has to say about renewing our minds. For each Awakened chapter, this guide provides an opening reflection, devotion, further scripture reading, application questions, “to do” challenge, and a prayer that invites God to help you in applying the principles to your life. You can click here to get a special discount on both books together. Thank you for letting me share this with you today. I hope that Awakened and The Awakened Devotional Study Guide help you maintain your enthusiasm for teaching this school year, no matter what daily challenges come your way.
Angela has offered to give away a copy (ebook) of either or both of these books (you choose) to one reader of A Modern Teacher! Here's how the contest works:
To enter, just leave a comment below telling me one thing you do to keep a good attitude at school...it can be a little thing (like my little bits of chocolate) or a big thing. The contest will start today and run through Sunday night. The winner will be announced on Monday. The winner will be choosen by random.org according to the number of your comment. Thanks for participating!

I would love to have both of these books! How awesome. I sit in my students desks and pray for their families and them. That helps me stay positive, and I also smile, smile, smile.
ReplyDeleteMy email is Michelle.Stockert@k12.sd.us in case I win! :)
DeleteA smile goes a long way :)
Delete(and my posts always have waaaay too many smiley faces)
Ha! April
I treat each child as if they were my own. And we sing and dance alot!
ReplyDeletekabaxter@cox.net
Good stuff! As a reward, I do kartwheels in my class. oh my! I am getting older and can't do it as well--haha but my first class I ever taught graduated last year and that is one thing that they remember --that I did kartwheels. GO FIGURE :)
DeleteApril
The books sound great. We all need to remember that we are not alone and the little ones depend on us to make learning a joy.
ReplyDeletedebinderry@gmail.com
We aren't. It is good to find atleast ONE good teaching buddy on campus. Don't you think?
DeleteI try to remember each of these children is someone else's child. What if he/she was my child?
ReplyDeleterebeccafarlee@yahoo.com
Yes! And now that I have my own children--woa--!!
DeleteI try to make sure each child I teach feels loved unconditionally. I also try and make learning fun. Would love to have these books to help hone my teaching skills!
ReplyDeletepianolady68@yahoo.com
Awww! You know--sometimes we are the only thing that is constant and consistent in their lives. :)
DeleteI make sure each child knows they are special and loved. I also think about if they were one of my own how would I want them to be treated.
ReplyDeleteKltcarley@gmail.come
You are their biggest advocates during the day. So sweet!
DeleteLast year was the most challenging & hurtful year I've ever had in my 13 years of teaching. Over the summer I stripped my room and completely redecorated with colors & things I love to make it my happy place! That is a big thing I did to try to stay positive but THE biggest thing is I PRAY! I would love both books. Trisha.smith1999@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteSometimes a change like that is exactly what you need to get motivated to go back. ! Good luck this year!
DeleteI love to help my colleagues. So, I always try to find something nifty for each of them to use in their class. I scour the Internet ( blogstalk!) until I find something that I know each of them can use! The expression of happiness on their faces reminds me that a small token of love goes a long way to keep, not only me, but everyone a little more positive!! Also, I eat lunch with my kids every day. This gives me a chance to interact with them on a social level. The things you can find out during lunch about your kiddos is amazing! The most important thing, though, is prayer!
ReplyDeletePstein774@yahoo.com
You sound like a teammate I would love to have!! You are brave--eating lunch with your kids--I only did that on very special occassions :) Yes, pray!!
DeleteAs the children enter, I give them each a high-five and if they want a hug, that too.

Sweet!
DeleteI would love a copy of these books:). To keep a good attitude at school, I try to make sure I talk to my coworkers. It seems so simple, but it is really easy to go to work, teach all day, and come home having had only minimal adult interaction. Not only is it a stress reducer, but we often collaborate, share ideas, and help one another with problem.
ReplyDeleteStephanieelainecrisp@hotmail.com
I need that interaction too! I gotta find my teacher buds after school. Even if it is just for a few minutes!
DeleteI would love a copy of Awakened! A few of the things I do to stay positive is avoid the teacher's lounge (gossip central) and eat with my students, leave little notes in their backpacks or lunch boxes, and write positive affirmations to them. I teach military students who often have a deployed, wounded, or otherwise "busy" military parent. This helps them feel loved and appreciated by someone while keeping our classroom atmosphere positive!

Wow! You seem like a wonderful teacher!! Any kid would be blessed to have you :)
DeleteAwesome! I have her Cornerstone book, but would love Awakened and the devotional. Morale at my school has been on the decline over the last several years, so I could really use these books. I try to surround myself with the people who I know will look out for me the most!
ReplyDeleteamynovellino@hotmail.com
A good teacher friend is irreplacable. :)
DeleteThese books would be wonderful to have! I make sure to greet each of my students with a smile and good morning as they enter the classroom each day. I also try to surround myself with the most positive and supportive people on my campus to help lift my spirits.

A smile really does go a long way!
DeleteWould love the books! Could always use some uplifting! I try to view everything with a sense of humor. I love joking around with the faculty, staff, and kids!
ReplyDeletedenise.strawn@yahoo.com
Fun! One of the quotes I really try to teach by-- "If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right. " from John F. Kennedy and I'm not really a funny person but I do love to laugh !!
DeleteI know that many of my students are feeling the effects of stressed out parents for one reason or another. I try to always welcome my students with a smile and by telling them that I am glad they are here or that I missed them over the summer/weekend/vacation. I take time to actually listen to the stories they tell me about their weekends. This kind of relationship building is time well spent. krausshouse4@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWe have a share out on Mondays--every Monday. They can tell me one thing they did or anything really. I really try to listen to every single response and follow up with some comment throughout the day. Listening is so important. Thanks for leaving a comment :)
