Do you use a teaching journal?  I know what you’re thinking…time to write something down? Heck no! Well I, my friends, don’t have a great memory.  So what I do is not a typical journal…it is not like a personal journal.  I don’t go on and on about my day.  Nope.  No time for that!!

My teaching journal is a place to write some major a-has for the day in a few words AND my journal is a place to write some social situations that come up. You know those situations when Susie Q said this about Little Bo Peep and you handle it and think it is solved but then low and behold you get a phone call from someone about the situation.  It is not one of those situations you send anyone to the office for or have to conference with anyone about…it is just something that came up…Well, those are the types of things I tend to forget the details about and then 3 days later, when so and so calls and wants to know what happened…well, I’ve learned to just double check my teaching journal.  I write minimal words…just enough to jog my memory.

I also write words the kids say that I don’t want to forget…but don’t really have time to write it on an anchor chart at that exact moment.  Or a statement a child says that doesn’t usually comment…just anything out of the ordinary.

My journal is a place to be reflective but doesn’t take up too much time…
